Kanha Tiger Safari: Zones, Timings, Permits and How to Actually Book It
Kanha tiger safaris run twice daily — a morning drive from around sunrise for four to five hours, and an afternoon drive from around 15:00 until sunset. Entry is by permit in a registered jeep with a Forest Department guide, through Khatia, Mukki or Sarhi gates. Core-zone permits are limited by zone and vehicle and should be booked several weeks ahead for peak months. Courtyard House arranges permits, zones and naturalists in-house.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
Every drive is a permit against a specific zone, a specific date and a specific slot, in a registered vehicle with a Forest Department guide aboard. Permits release through the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department's online system on a rolling advance window, and core-zone slots for the high season sell out.This is the single most common way a Kanha trip goes wrong: travellers book the hotel first, then discover there are no core permits left for their dates.

Add On Facility
If a seat is available, more guests can be added to the jeep, subject to a maximum of six. A one-time charge has to be paid amounting to Rs.1500. This subject is to rules; hence, contact us for more information.
Full Day Safari Booking
A full-day safari allows entry half an hour earlier than a regular one, and exit is also half an hour late. There is no zone restriction, but the rest of the rules have to be followed. For booking this permit, one needs to write to the Field Director Kanha at Mandla along with a demand draft payable to the PCCF Bhopal. The booking can be done one hundred twenty days ahead. The fee is very high and keeps on changing. Four guests are allowed on the jeep along with the forest guide. The whole day is spent on a full-day safari, and hence it is best suited for wildlife photographers and filmmakers.

Khatia Night Safari at Kanha
Night Safari is organized at Khatia Zone in the buffer. The ride is in an open jeep. This is the best way to experience natural activities and animals at Kanha National Park. We organize night safaris on prior intimation by hotel guests. Only a few safaris are organized by the department for a fee. The duration is three hours, and it is sufficient to get a glimpse of a tiger on the prowl, four-horned antelope, civet cats, leopards, porcupines, nilgai, sloth bears, bison, sambar, night jars, and other common animals. Flashlights or searchlights are not allowed, please note.
Night Safari Booking is done at the gate at least one day before the night of the safari.
WHICH ZONE TO BOOK
Book the zone that matches your gate. Kanha's gates are far apart. A guest staying at Patpara who books Mukki is looking at a two-hour pre-dawn transfer each way, twice a day. From Khatia Gate the sensible bookings are Kanha, Kisli, and Sarhi—and Courtyard House is the closest lodge to Khatia.
TIMINGS
Exact reporting times shift month by month with sunrise and sunset and are printed on the permit. Morning — gates open around sunrise, drive runs roughly four to five hours. Afternoon — entry from around 15:00, exit at sunset. There is no night safari in the core zone.
COSTS
Core-zone full-jeep tariffs have recently run in the region of ₹9,000–10,500 per vehicle per drive for Indian nationals, with weekend rates above weekdays, and single-seat bookings around ₹1,200 per seat where seat-sharing is permitted. Buffer-zone safaris cost considerably less. Foreign-national rates differ.

No getting out of the vehicle in the core zone. No feeding, no calling, and no playing recorded calls. Stay on designated routes. Follow the guide's instruction at a sighting without argument—crowding is what turns a good sighting into a short one.
